Foil splits are a defect from the foil stage that will affect the soldering stage due to solder only sticking to foil and not glass.
These can typically be seen on tight curves or other complicated geometry because the foil can only stretch so much before tearing. Thus leaving you with small < shaped gaps.
Prevention
Preventing these splits greatly depends on how sharp the angle or curve is. Gentle curves likely won't need any extra preparation while sharper ones will.
Sharp Curves
With sharp curves you will need to use Foil Saddles to cover the hole created as it's not possible to stretch the foil enough any other way.
Gentle Curves
Gentle curves give you a much easier time. You can still do Foil Saddles if that's what you prefer, but you can also roll the foil over gently.
